What Are Millwork Shop Drawings? A Definition for Contractors

Millwork shop drawings are detailed technical documents that translate a design concept into fabrication-ready instructions. Unlike architectural drawings — which show how a space looks and functions — shop drawings show how each individual piece is built, dimensioned, and assembled.

Think of them as the instruction manual for your cabinet shop. They contain every measurement, every material callout, every hardware specification, and every joinery detail the fabricator needs to build the piece correctly without asking a single question.

Why Are Shop Drawings Different From Architectural Plans?

Architectural plans show the intent — what goes where, how big it is roughly, how it relates to the room. Shop drawings show the execution — how thick the panels are, what joinery connects them, what hardware is specified by model number, how the piece is attached to the wall.

Both are necessary. Neither replaces the other. The architect draws the vision; the shop drawing translates it into something a skilled woodworker can actually cut, assemble, and install.

A complete millwork shop drawing eliminates ambiguity between designer, contractor, and fabricator. Every question that isn’t answered on paper becomes an RFI — and every RFI costs time and money.

What Does a Millwork Shop Drawing Package Include?

A production-ready package typically contains the following:

1. Elevations

Front, side, and back elevations of every millwork piece — showing overall dimensions, door and drawer configurations, handle positions, reveals, and panel layouts. Every surface that will be visible in the final room should have a drawn elevation.

2. Sections

Horizontal and vertical cuts through the piece that reveal internal construction — shelf positions, cabinet depth, interior fittings, drawer box heights, and how the unit connects to the floor, wall, or ceiling.

3. Joinery Details

Close-up drawings of how individual components connect: dovetails, dado joints, edge banding, face frame attachment methods, and any CNC-machined connections. This is where fabrication quality is determined.

4. Hardware Schedule

A complete list of every hinge, slide, pull, push-to-open mechanism, and specialty fitting — with manufacturer name, exact model number, and finish. No vague descriptions like ‘soft-close hinge’. Specific model numbers only.

5. Material and Finish Schedule

Substrate specification (MDF, plywood, solid wood, species), veneer or laminate product codes, edge treatment, paint specification with exact color codes and sheen, and any surface treatment details.

6. Complete Dimensioning

Every dimension stated explicitly. No calculated dimensions. No ‘NTS’ (not to scale) callouts on production drawings. If the fabricator has to do math to find a number, the drawing is incomplete.

PRO TIP: The fastest way to evaluate a shop drawing package is to count the RFIs it generates. A well-prepared package from an architect-led studio should generate zero questions before fabrication begins.

Who Produces Millwork Shop Drawings?

Shop drawings are typically produced by one of three parties:

  • The cabinet shop itself — using software like Cabinet Vision, Microvellum, or AutoCAD
  • A dedicated millwork drawing studio — specializing in production-ready packages
  • The architect of record — usually for high-end projects where the GC requires architect-reviewed submittals

 

Each has tradeoffs. In-house shop drawing by the fabricator is fast but can lack design coordination. Architect-reviewed drawings add credibility and reduce submittal rejections, but cost more. A specialized studio offers the middle ground: speed, accuracy, and design intelligence without the overhead.

Common Mistakes in Millwork Shop Drawings

After reviewing hundreds of shop drawing packages, here are the most frequent issues we see:

  1. Missing elevations on ‘non-feature’ walls — every surface needs a drawing
  2. Hardware described generically (‘soft-close hinge’) instead of by model number
  3. Dimensions that require calculation — if it’s not stated, it will be questioned
  4. Sections that don’t cut through complex areas — single section through a kitchen island isn’t enough
  5. Material callouts that use trade names without manufacturer and product codes

 

Each of these generates at minimum one RFI. On a multi-room project, five categories of errors multiplied across ten pieces means fifty points of ambiguity entering the shop floor. The result is delays, cost overruns, and callbacks.
