Getting kitchen cabinet shop drawings right is the single most important step between a kitchen design and a successful installation. The cabinets are visible in every photo, used every day — and when the drawings are incomplete, the callbacks are expensive
The difference between a kitchen that installs cleanly and one that generates weeks of callbacks almost always comes down to the quality of the shop drawings. This guide covers what a kitchen cabinet shop drawing package needs to include — and what to watch for before sending drawings to the fabricator.
Why Kitchen Cabinet Shop Drawings Are Different
Kitchen cabinets present unique drawing challenges that other millwork scopes don’t:
- Appliance integration — drawings must coordinate with exact appliance model dimensions
- Plumbing and electrical rough-in locations must be reflected in cabinet cutouts
- NKBA clearance standards govern aisle widths, door swing clearances, and working triangle dimensions
- Hardware selection affects door/drawer gap reveals, hinge boring positions, and pull placement
- Counter height, backsplash height, and upper cabinet height must coordinate with each other and with the ceiling
A drawing set that doesn’t address all of these doesn’t belong on a shop floor. Every gap in the documentation is a decision that gets made at installation — and installation-time decisions are always more expensive than drawing-time decisions.
The NKBA Standards Every Drawing Must Reflect
The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) publishes planning guidelines that define minimum clearances for functional kitchen design. Any kitchen cabinet drawing package for a US residential project should comply with these standards:
- Work aisles: minimum 42 inches for one cook, 48 inches for two
- Doorway clearance: minimum 32 inches clear opening
- Landing space beside the refrigerator: minimum 15 inches
- Landing space beside the range: minimum 12 inches on one side
- Dishwasher placement: within 36 inches of the sink centerline
These aren’t suggestions — they’re the baseline that any general contractor, inspector, or AHJ can check against. Including NKBA compliance notes on the drawings protects everyone in the chain.
What a Complete Kitchen Shop Drawing Package Includes
Floor Plan With Appliances
The starting point: a dimensioned floor plan showing every cabinet run, the appliance footprints at exact model dimensions, the sink location, all doors and drawers in open position to check clearances, and the electrical/plumbing rough-in points.
Full Elevation Set
An elevation for every wall that has cabinetry — including the inside of islands viewed from all four sides. Elevations show cabinet widths, heights, door and drawer configurations, hardware positions,
💡 PRO TIP: Never skip an elevation because it ‘looks like the other side’. The shop floor reads one elevation at a time. If it’s not drawn, it will be built from assumption.
Sections Through Critical Points
Vertical sections through the sink base (showing the plumbing cutout and under-sink configuration), the range area (showing the ventilation chase if applicable), the island (showing internal structure and electrical rough-in), and any tall unit containing a built-in appliance.
Hardware Schedule
For kitchens specifically, the hardware schedule must include:
- Hinge manufacturer, model, finish, and drilling dimensions (European vs. face frame)
- Drawer slide type (undermount vs. side mount), load rating, travel length, and soft-close mechanism
- Pull or knob: manufacturer, SKU, finish, projection, and mounting hole spacing
- Any specialty hardware: waste bins, pull-out pantry systems, corner solutions, lift systems
Countertop Coordination Notes
The drawing package should note the countertop material, thickness, edge profile, and overhang dimensions — even if the countertop is being drawn by a separate party. The cabinet shop needs to know the exact countertop thickness to set scribing heights and appliance cutout dimensions correctly.
The Biggest Mistakes on Kitchen Cabinet Drawings
Missing Appliance Model Numbers
’36-inch refrigerator’ is not a specification. Appliance dimensions vary by model by up to 2 inches in width and 3 inches in depth. Always specify the exact make and model number — or at minimum the exact cavity dimensions the client has committed to.
Generic Hardware Callouts
‘Soft-close undermount slide’ can mean fifty different products with different drilling requirements. Specify the manufacturer and model. When the shop orders the wrong slide because the drawing was vague, someone pays for it — usually the contractor.
No Plumbing or Electrical Coordination
Drawings that show cabinets without showing where the P-trap sits, where the electrical outlet is inside the drawer, or where the gas line enters the range base create field problems that could have been solved in 10 minutes at the drawing stage.
What to Ask Your Drawing Studio Before You Start
Before engaging a millwork drawing studio for a kitchen project, confirm:
- Are you familiar with NKBA planning guidelines?
- Do your drawings include appliance rough-in coordination?
- Will the hardware schedule include manufacturer model numbers?
- Do you draw countertop coordination notes?
- How many revision rounds are included?
- What format do you deliver — DWG, PDF, RVT?
